“A bear blockade”. How Ukraine loses a reputation of reliable transit country in the eyes of EU
Ukrainian radicals began a permanent action on blocking the movement of Russian wagons and demanded from the authorities to ban the entry and movement of Russian carriers on the territory of Ukraine. Russia replied via delay of Ukrainian goods.
Blocking of transit of Russian trucks by radicals, or so-called «a bear blockade» – is nothing more than populism, while the economy of Ukraine itself obtains damages, – Oleksandr Klymenko – politician and public figure, leader of the «Uspіshna Kraina» party wrote on his Facebook page.
Firstly, Ukrainian budget will not receive tens of millions UAH of income tax only on truckers. We have already lost hundreds of millions on the prohibition of flights of Russian airlines.
Secondly, Russia has already begun to use countermeasures to block the transit of Ukrainian trucks. It means that Ukrainian products are losing access to the Nordic, the Caucasus, and Central Asia markets.
Thirdly, there is a risk that the counterparties from EU countries, that buy Russian goods, will be also affected. Ukraine, as well as during the “gas wars” of 2006 and 2009, is losing its reputation in the eyes of the EU as a reliable transit country of not natural gas, but products. It is no secret that the Europeans are really pragmatic in this context. Friendship is friendship, but business is business.
Oleksandr Klymenko states that nowadays, Ukraine is rapidly losing its reputation. It will not be surprising if Europe does not only give up the association, but adopts measures to protect themselves from risky and unpredictable Ukraine, where power is not in the hands of the government, but in paramilitary groups with uncertain status.
All is going to the fact that it will be easier for the EU to resolve issues directly with Moscow, bypassing Kiev.
It is beneficial for Ukrainian government that lives in “selfish” interests. It is better to let the people discuss this imaginary “victory” than the government’s report on February 16, antirecord of dollar and rising electricity tariffs.
Unfortunately, whoever wins in this situation, the Ukrainians will definitely lose.
